Sam Fox - Secured Position Through Powers of Recess AppointmentSam Fox is an American businessman and a prominent donor of the Republican Party. In April 2007, he was made the United States ambassador to Belgium by President George W. Bush. He was nominated earlier for the same post but following objections by Senator Kerry group, it was withdrawn. Fox was born in Desloge, Missouri in 1929. He went to Washington University and graduated in 1951 with an A.B in business. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. Fox is the founder of the multi-billion dollar investment firm, Harbor Group Industries. He is also involved in many philanthropic events. He chairs the Greater St. Louis Boy Scouts committee. He has also served as the chairman of the Republican Jewish Coalition. Fox is a major donor to the Republican Party. He collected more than $100,000 for the bush campaign in 2000 (Bush Pioneer). In the 2004 Bush campaign he was a `ranger` i.e he recruited others who donated. Fox made a contribution of $50,000 to the so called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. This was a group of 527 members who claimed that Kerry had exaggerated his service records and therefore opposed his candidature in the 2004 Presidential election. Fox was nominated for the post of United States ambassador to Belgium. However this led strong objections from Kerry and the group of veterans who had served with him. He withdrew his nomination before the Senate foreign relation committee could take up the vote on the issue. On April 4, 2007, Bush secured Fox position by using his powers of recess appointment which does not require senate approval. He will therefore remain the ambassador till the next session of congress which also means for the remainder of Bush Presidency. |
