Niger Uranium ForgeriesNiger Uranium forgeries is yet another controversy regarding the falsification and misrepresentation of evidence to justify the invasion of Iraq by the U.S and its `coalition of the willing`. Before the invasion of Iraq, the Italian Intelligence had revealed classified documents which claimed that Saddam and his regime had sought to purchase a special compound, called the yellowcake uranium, from Niger. Yellowcake uranium is an intermediary stage product in the development of enriched uranium (enriched uranium can be used for nuclear weapon). Niger Uranium Forgeries refer to controversy related to these falsified documents. Based on these documents, assertions were made by both the U.S and UK administrations that Iraq was seeking to obtain nuclear material in order to create WMD`s which was against the sanctions imposed on Iraq by the UN. To strengthen the claims made by G.W Bush administration regarding Iraq and its allegedly WMD`s program, George Tenet (CIA Director) and Secretary Of State Colin Powell, specifically cited yellowcake purchase allegations made on Iraq to the Senate Foreign Committee in 2002. Around the same time the British administration also published reports of an attempt made by the Iraqi government to purchase nuclear material from an African Country. The authenticity of these documents has been challenged by many in the U.S intelligence. IAEA had also voiced it doubt over the documents authenticity to the UN days before the invasion started. The administration later admitted that the evidence was inconclusive and attributed the error to the CIA. FBI investigation was reopened on this case to determine the origins of the documents. |
