He also turned down a three year long $3.6 million contract from the Cardinals to join the army. His brother, Kevin Tillman, also gave up his chance to become a professional baseball player. After completing their training, the two brothers were soon deployed in the Middle East for the Iraq invasion on 2003. Patrick was later redeployed to Afghanistan where he was killed in a friendly fire incident. Tillman death has become a subject of much controversy and media attention. His family was notified by pentagon that he had died in a friendly fire incident, weeks after his memorial service. His family alleged that Department of Defense knowingly delayed the disclosure for weeks in order to protect its image of the US armed forces. |
