Larry Franklin - Unauthorized Disclosure of Classified Information - Espionage
Lawrence Anthony Franklin faced charges regarding the AIPAC espionage scandal. Larry Franklin is a US air force reserve colonel. He pleaded guilty to the charges of passing information regarding the United States policy towards Iran to the foremost pro Israeli lobbying organization in US, AIPAC( American Israel Public Affair committee) while working for the Defense Department.
Franklin worked in the Office of Special Plans from 2002 to 2003. Office of Special Plans was set up by the former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfield. Douglas faith, who led the OSP, sent Larry Franklin repeatedly on oversees mission for sensitive projects which involved foreign citizen’s contacts. Larry met with Iran contra figures who were also shopping for intelligence on Iraq WMD`s program to an eager audience. However post invasion of Iraq, the evidence of existence of `stockpiles` of WMD`s as claimed by the OSP were found to be inaccurate.
Larry Franklin case was heard in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. On January 20, 2006, JudgeT.S.Ellis sentenced Franklin for almost 1 3 years of prison (151 months) and charged him $10,000 fine. Two other former employees of the organization are also facing charges in assisting Franklin in passing classified information to an Israeli Diplomat.
Franklin was ultimately charged with unauthorized disclosure of classified information, not with espionage.
