Iraq and WMD`sOne of the biggest controversy in the Presidency of G.W Bush, accuses the United states and the President himself of deliberately inflating and misrepresenting evidence to justify the invasion of Iraq. It concerns the claims made by the U.S and few of its allies regarding the posssession and intention of acquiring types of weapons of mass destruction by the Iraqi Government and especially by the President of Iraq, Saddam Hussein. Saddam Hussein was internationally accused of intentionally using chemical weapons in the Iran Iraq war during the 1980`s. Saddam and his regime ran into a decade long confrontation with the U.N and the U.S after the Gulf War in 1991 which resulted in inspection by the delegates from U.N for any quantity of Iraqi WMD. Through out the 1990`s UN inspectors located and destroyed large quantities of Iraq WMD`s.WMD`s were further degraded by Operation Desert Fox. In the early years of this millineum, especially in the wake of 9/11, US and UK claimed that Saddam and his regime still possesed stockpiles of WMD`s .These claims based on `facts` and `evidence` provided by US and UK and other intelligence experts, were followed by restarting of the inspections in 2002. However, the inspection and many other reprots submitted to UN by the international inspectors, dismissed the claims of possession of WMD`s by Iraq as false and baseless. No evidence could be turned up during many intense inspectios.Nonetheless, US and its `coalition of the willing` invaded Iraq in march 2003. Saddam regime was overthrown. To this day, no evidence of WMD`s has been found though components from 1990`s and 1980`s were found. Many thoeries have been put forward and many stories have emerged accusing US and in particular President Bush of misleading the world with inflated and false evidence. |
