David Safavian - Lobbying & Corruption ScandalDavid Hossein Safavian is an Iranian American from Detroit, Michigan. He is also the former Chief of Staff of the United States General Services Administration (GAS).On October 27, 2006, he was convicted and sentenced to 18 months in prison for his connections with the Jack Abramoff Lobbying and corruption scandal. Safavian was born on August 4, 1967. He graduated fifth in his class from Detroit College of Law. A longtime friend of Jack Abramoff, the two worked together at the Washington based lobbying firm of Preston Gates & Ellis in the mid 1990`s. Safavian is also a co founder of the lobbying firm `The Merrit Group` and the Internet Consumer Choice Coalition, a non profit coalition whose sole purpose was to fight against the bill that was to make online gambling a federal crime. Salavian was made the Senior Advisor and acting Deputy Chief of Staff at the GSA on May16, 2002. Soon after, in 2003, his name was nominated by the President to be the Administrator for the Federal Procurement Policy, Office of Management and Budget. On October 5, 2005, Safavian was indicted. He was accused of making false statements and obstructing investigation into his dealings with Jack Abramoff while he was Chief of Staff for GSA. His trial started on May 25, 2006. He was found guilty on four of the five charges brought against him. These included lying to the Senate Indian Affair Committee, lying to the GSA ethical office, lying to the GSA Inspector General office and obstructing the work of Inspector General of GSA. He was sentenced for 18 months in prison on October 27, 2006. |
