The reports including pictures of prisoner abuse first surfaced in the beginning of 2004.It brought to public attention numerous incidents of abuse and torture of these detainees by the US military. These reports of abuse at the Abu Ghraib Prison (also known as Baghdad correctional facility) were criticized by many around the world. Some critics claimed that these incidents reflected the broader attitude of the American administration and its policy of disrespect towards Arabs. The political scandal of Abu Ghraib provided blow to the credibility of the American army and damaged its public image not only outside US but within US as well. To their defense, the administration claimed that these inhumane incidents of the prisoners were isolated acts of low ranking personnel’s in charge of the prison. They argued that the administration and high ranking officials were not aware of these isolated acts of abuse. However, the critics claimed that no such acts could have been carried out without the knowledge of higher authorities and demanded the resignations of high officials in the Bush administration. Seventeen soldiers and officers were removed from duty in response to the investigation carried out by the US Department of Defense. Seven soldiers were dishonorably discharged and sentenced to federal prison time. Brig. General Janis Karpinski who was the Commanding officer at the prison denied any knowledge of the abuse as she claims that her entry in to the interrogation room was not even allowed .She also alleged that the interrogations of the prisoner were authorized by her seniors and performed by subcontractors. Nonetheless, she was demoted to the rank of colonel in 2005. |
