NSA Call DatabaseNSA is the United States National Security Agency. NSA is alleged to have made a call database that contains records of telephone calls made from telephone service carriers. Four largest of the America’s telephone service provider have been alleged to have provided the data information to the NSA. These are AT&T, SBC, Verizon, and BellSouth. Such program carried out by the NSA was made public on May 10, 2006. USA Today was responsible for breaking the story of existence of such a database. According to some, the NSA Call Database program began months before the 2001 attacks during the Bush administration. Existence of such a record and illegal search activities carried out by the NSA has prompted fierce objections. Critics call it a violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. A law suit was filed against AT&T in the beginning of 2006 by Electronic Frontier foundation. It accuses the telephone company of providing the NSA access to its database. However the claims of denial of handing over any such information, made by Verizon and BellSouth do not rule out these allegations as according to the US codes of Law, the president can overlook the lies told by companies about their activities if he thinks that they are in National Interest. It is assumed that this database is the largest database assembled in the world. The content of the database contains the phone numbers of the caller and the recipient, the time and duration of the call. It contains both domestic and international call records. However the records do not contain the audio information of the phone call. |
